How do I get a medical card in Australia?

Unlike some other countries, Australia doesn’t use a medical card system for prescription natural medicines.

Instead, access is based on a valid prescription from an authorised prescriber or qualified healthcare professional. Your prescription is what legally allows you to access the medication that’s been prescribed for you.

When travelling within Australia, you don’t need to carry a medical card. We do recommend:

  • Keeping your medication in its original pharmacy packaging with the label attached, and
  • Carrying photo ID that matches the name on the pharmacy label

These steps can help avoid confusion when travelling domestically. Laws and requirements differ overseas, and Polln isn’t able to provide advice on international travel with prescribed medication.
